Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the trash from one of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
